The short answer
Hyundai showed the next-generation Tucson on October 1. It’s a full redesign: bigger outside, roomier inside, with new screens, an updated hybrid and a new off-road XRT PRO trim. Hyundai says it reaches North America in 2027. U.S. pricing and trims haven’t been announced yet.
What’s new
- Bigger: about 2.4 inches longer, 1.6 inches wider and 0.8 inch taller than the current Tucson. The doors also open wider (83 degrees, up from 73).
- New screens: a 12.9-inch or 17-inch center screen, plus a 9.9-inch display above the steering wheel that’s standard on every Tucson. Physical buttons stay for climate and audio. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included.
- Smarter voice control: a new “Hey Hyundai” assistant understands everyday speech, and the system gets over-the-air updates.
- Updated hybrid: Hyundai is targeting up to 42 mpg. A new Stay Mode lets you run the heat, A/C and charging with the engine off while you’re parked.
- Gas engine: a turbocharged 1.6-liter with 184 hp and an eight-speed automatic.
- XRT PRO: all-wheel drive, all-terrain tires, about 1.2 inches more ground clearance, front recovery hooks and Hyundai’s first Smart Terrain Assist.
- Useful extras: a column-mounted shifter, available heated glass that de-ices the windshield in about 15 minutes, and 41.7 cubic feet of cargo space.
Our take
The Tucson is Hyundai’s best-selling SUV worldwide, so this redesign is worth watching. The heated glass and hybrid Stay Mode are practical upgrades for Kentucky winters and ballgame tailgates. The XRT PRO should appeal to anyone who spends weekends on gravel and farm roads.
